How to prepare for your engagement session

It’s not a secret that I love engagement sessions and believe they are incredibly important! Spending time getting to know your photographer before your wedding day really helps ease nerves . It let’s couples know exactly what to expect and who they will be working with.

I thought it may be helpful to cover a few basic tips on how to prepare for your engagement session.

1 – Prepare your outfits and try them on at home.

Most engagement sessions include two outfits. I encourage couples to plan for one outfit to be dressier and the other a bit more casual. It’s important to remember it’s better for outfits to coordinate than to perfectly match. Be sure to try your outfits on at home – make sure you feel comfortable moving (sitting, standing, walking, etc.) and that you like how your outfits looks together.

2 – Plan to arrive early.

It’s understandable that we all have days when we run late, but please (please) don’t let it happen to your engagement session. Sessions are scheduled based on the best natural light of the day, which means if you are late we may loose the light and run out of time. It’s best to plan to arrive early, I recommend ten minutes before your scheduled start time. I also encourage couples to plan to extra drive time beyond what your GPS recommends.

3 – Stay hydrated.

This may seems like a silly tip, but I think it’s really important! Summer sessions are often very, very hot and humid. It’s important to stay hydrated the day of your session so that you look and feel your best.

4 – Pack a bag the night before with anything you may need.

Try to limit what you actually need to bring with you and pack it in one bag the night before. This will help you be prepared and not worried about forgetting something last minute.

5 – Remember it’s okay to be nervous!

It’s okay to be nervous! Most couples haven’t been photographed professionally before. I never expect anyone to pose themselves or to know what to do in front of the camera. Go into the session with an open mind and ready to have fun!
